CRL–Global Press Archive Charter Alliance : Open Access Collection 2 / CRL-Wide Collection 1: Middle Eastern and North African Newspapers (1875-2018)

This collection is approved by the GPA Advisory Committee under the CRL/East View GPA Charter Alliance, funded and supported by CRL members and participating non-member institutions. The proposed collection includes both Open Access titles and in-copyright titles presented for CRL-wide access. This dual collection would total over one million pages and consist of approximately 35 titles from 11 countries, and includes titles in Arabic, English, and French.

Reasons for consideration:

Middle Eastern & North African Newspapers offers a geographically diverse perspective spanning the decline of colonialism, the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the Suez Canal, the Cold War, the rise of the petroleum economy, 20th century pan-Arab movements, the First and Second World Wars, the establishment of the state of Israel, the Iran-Iraq War, and the recent Arab Spring. Each represented country has a unique history and reactions to global events and the collection would offer a valuable foundation for new research possibilities.

These core lists, based on holdings assembled by Stanford University and CRL’s centrally-held collection, represents a plan for broad geographic and chronological coverage, leveraging advance diligence on the status of rights and original/surrogate materials for digitization. Rights for in-copyright titles on the list have already been obtained from the publishers. The scope of the “combined” collection is large, with over 1.5MM pp. available for potential inclusion. The Stanford- and CRL-based collection skews more heavily to in-copyright runs and CRL/EVIS are interested in identifying additional Open Access-eligible content to round out the OA portion of the collection.
