Vokrug svi︠e︡ta /Vokrug Sveta is a Russian geography journal that began publishing in 1861. It is one of the longest-running Russian journals that was published initially from December of 1861 through 1917. It was not published from 1869-1884, 1918-1926, and during the years of WWII. This proposal envisions digitization of a complete run of the journal, as confirmed by Mike Peters of East View.

Reasons for consideration:

Although the journal’s website provides information on the archive of the issues [2] (https://www.vokrugsveta.ru/vs/column/5904/ [3]), it is not accessible here. The issues from 1861-1866 (volumes 1-6) are accessible full-text on Hathi Trust (https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/100615447 [4]). Hathi Trust does not index any published volumes of the journal starting 1866 through 1946 and then from 1952 onwards. The issues that are indexed are from 1947-1951 with limited search capabilities.

As one of the leading popular science journals in Russia, this title has been frequently requested in recent years by students hoping to study extensive portions of its run throughout history. In addition to covering topics related to geography and travel, it was also a source for popular fiction, including works in translation by eminent authors from around the world. For a period of its run, it was edited by the journalist Masha Gessen, and her connection to the journal (as well as her dismissal from it) has created further interest in this title and its history among researchers.
