I am requesting the digitization of a collection of miscellaneous newspapers that a former graduate student living in Yangon was able to collect for the University of Washington, before he was obliged to leave several months after the February 2021 military coup.

Reasons for consideration:

This collection of material represents a unique snapshot of the post-coup disruption in Myanmar in the aftermath of February 2021 military coup.  While we have not yet analyzed the political content of the titles, we know that many of them were forced to shut down during this period, and that at least some contain dissent in the form of cartoons and other forms of public protest.  We also believe that the Library of Congress office was not in a position to collect during most of this period, and certainly not this range of titles. In fact, we did receive duplicates of the materials, originally collected for LC, but they were not able to negotiate payment. Instead, those duplicates will go to Cornell.

We believe that this collection will have both immediate and enduring scholarly value, as witness to the early days of the coup and its evolving impact on society, particularly in Yangon.  Regrettably, we were not able to collect materials from outside of the capital city.
