Reasons for consideration:
Republican “Minguo” China (1912-1949) was an era contrasted by industrialization and modernization but also civil unrest and outright war between Nationalists and Communists. At the same time, China faced foreign invasion from Japanese imperialism as the entire globe was subsumed into World War II. At the conclusion of the War, internal fighting continued with the ultimate victory of Communist forces and the ejection of Nationalists to Taiwan.
This momentous era in Chinese history is poorly represented with existing newspaper databases. Available current digitized newspaper collections are predominantly controlled by Chinese corporations and institutions that may not best reflect the full range of viewpoints. There are currently no Open Access Republican Era China newspaper collections. Hoover Institution Library and Archives, mandated with documenting war, revolution and peace, collected extensively from the region during this time period.
Titles selected for inclusion represent available content covering the full period leading up to and through the Republican Era and broad coverage from all areas of the country. Research into these titles also identified supplementary content in microfilm available for inclusion from CRL and member libraries that will expand the holdings to ensure comprehensive coverage of all known and available issues for these newspapers.
Content will be sourced from Stanford University Libraries holdings and/or from CRL members to ensure a comprehensive and deep resource for academic research.
