Benson Collection of Serials on Microform

Microfilmed collection of 600 serials from across Latin America, from the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection, including government publications and other serials published primarily between 1821 and 1982. The rare and endangered titles were originally captured on microfilm during the early1980s through a U.S. Department of Education Title II-C grant. The Benson Library created archival-quality master negatives, but was unable make these accessible until print masters and catalog records could be created. The LAMP effort supported the duplication of film, which included a copy to be held at the Center for Research Libraries, and Texas supported the cataloging of the resources. This eight-year effort added approximately 900 reels of microfilm to LAMP’s collection....

Fondo Real de Cholula

The project will digitize and describe 25 boxes, comprising approximately 27,000 pages, from the Fondo Real de Cholula, a one-of-a-kind collection of documents providing insight into how indigenous residents of Cholula navigated colonial judicial structures over the span of four centuries.  The project partners with the Archivo Judicial del Estado de Puebla, and employs three local historians to digitize and describe the collection.  Logistical and technical support, as well as long-term preservation and access infrastructure, will be provided by LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections (LLILAS Benson), in collaboration with the University of Texas Libraries (UT Libraries).

Government publications and documents regarding Kashmir

This proposal is for 15 individual titles related to the Kashmir situation, primarily during the late 1950s and 1960s. Included are two Secret Reports by government entities related to potential terrorist activity. Indiana University is the only known holder of these two reports, which were gifted to the institution in 2005. The additional titles are other related government documents from this time period, also scarcely held in WorldCat. Most of these are published by entities within or related to the Pakistani government, as the Indian government publications that are both relevant and held at IU are more widely held.

Memory and Cultural Identities: The Newspapers and Historical Documents of Southern Patagonia, Part II

In Southern Patagonia local media, especially newspapers, played a fundamental role in the formation of regional identity. In the early twentieth century the growth of cattle ranching in the south of the country fostered the conditions needed for the growth of an extensive publishing industry particularly in newspapers and periodicals. Local elites founded numerous newspaper outlets whose primary purpose was to defend local interests but also with the intent to define regional identity. Many publications were devoted to the struggle between liberal and conservative ideologies, but ultimately the success of these enterprises depended on how well they were able to represent the interests and needs of the local elite. Local newspapers became a central mechanism in the region for imposing...

Mexican and Argentine presidential messages, 1821-1993

Proposal to convert and upgrade the digital collection of Mexican and Argentine presidential speeches from the 19th century orginially scanned by the Latin Americanist Research Resources Project (LARRP).

In 2000, LARRP converted over 75,000 frames of microfilmed Spanish-language government documents to digital format. The material was originally microfilmed by the Library of Congress (Argentina) and LAMP (Mexico) on LARRP's behalf. The converted materials were hosted by LANIC at the University of Texas at Austin as GIF files, with larger TIFF files available for downloading.

We propose to harvest the TIFF images from LANIC/Texas (with permission) and to re-process the files to capture full text  (OCR) and related metadata.

State of Baja California Human Rights Commission Archives Case Digitization Project Phase 2B and/or 3

These cases hold information on the types of abuses that were filed during that time along the Baja California/California border. The data in these cases, many of which were terminated, closed, or dismissed before full investigations were completed, will provide a snapshot of the region for border scholars and historians alike. The goal of this project is to eventually make all of these older cases available for research and data mining online via DigitaIUSD, USD’s Institutional Repository. This proposal asks for funding for Phase 2B to redact the digitized cases and Phase 3 to apply metadata for eventual ingesting into the repository.

Venezuela and The Turbulent 1960s - Presidential Archive of Raúl Leoni

The Presidential Archive of Raúl Leoni is a collection of personal papers and official documents that is in urgent need of digitization in order to make them more easily accessible to scholars and the community. To this end, the Fundación Red Historia Digital Venezolana (or Venezuela History Network) and the Fundación Raúl y Menca Leoni have been working together on the development of a digital repository for these documents in order to preserve this invaluable cache of cultural heritage. We propose to digitize the entire archive, generate the corresponding metadata for each document at the item level, and promote the archive’s content online through the creation of an open-access repository hosted by the Venezuela History Network website.
