African Newspapers 1986-2015 Library of Congress - Nairobi

Library of Congress, Nairobi Office proposes for microfilming a collection of 96 African newspaper titles from 1986-2015 with an estimated 58,211 pages. Countries covered include Burundi, Comoros, Congo (Democratic Republic), Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, and Rwanda. The collection covers varied topics including business, politics, leisure and economics news that would greatly inform the intellectual debates of the period covered.

African Newspapers 1992-2016 from the Library of Congress Nairobi Office. Part 3

Library of Congress, Nairobi Office proposes for microfilming a collection of 38 African newspaper titles (approximately 6,600 pages) distributed among 10 countries including: Botswana, Cameroon, Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Reunion, Rwanda and Tanzania. The Encounter: Official newspaper of the Christian League of Southern Africa and the Rhodesia Christian group

Countering the efforts of the antiapartheid community the CLSA and the RCG rallied in support of the governments apartheid policies. Both groups supported the government’s policies on religious grounds in the case of the CLSA and on anti Marxists grounds in terms of the RCG. The CLSA was criticized for brining both religious and political issues together in the same debate.

In this project, Yale University Library and Northwestern University Library propose to arrange for the microfilming through CAMP of an estimated 13,838 pages of Lesotho newspaper titles from 1990 to 2018.  The titles include The African, Family Mirror, Her Heroes 'n Heroines, Informative, Lesotho Monitor, Maddhouse Weekly, Mohlanka, Moitseki, Moqolotsi, Motjoli's Review, Nonyana, Sechaba, Shoeshoe, Spectator, Sunday Express, Varsity Breeze, Voice of Free Democrats, Watchdog, and Weekly Mail.

Malian Arabic Manuscript Microfilming Project: Enhancing Access to CRL Digital Reproductions

In 2002, CRL digitized all 16 microfilm reels composing an important repository of West African primary sources: the Malian Arabic Manuscript Microfilm Project (MAMMP). These reels were first microfilmed in the late 1970s with the support of the National Endowment for Humanities (RC-*0771-78, 1977-1980). These documents were collected in state repositories in France (Bibliothèque National de France), Senegal (Archives nationales), and especially in private collections in Mali. Yet, despite the significance of the materials, after 40 years the MAMMP manuscripts are still underutilized. Only David Robinson’s classic The Holy War of ‘Umar Tall...

Nation (Blantyre, Malawi)

A major daily newspaper based in Blantyre, Malawi, the capital of the country's southern region, as well as Blantyre district.  It is owned by Nation Publications Limited (NPL) which was established by the veteran politician the late Dr. Aleke Banda back in 1993.  The Nation began distribution in July 1993, became a daily in 1994 and an important voice against multi-party rule and the MCP party during the transition to multi-party rule.  Over the years its circulation has increased from the initial 5,000 copies to many thousands of copies.

Preserving Afro-Brazilian History: Abdias do Nascimento

This project continues the ongoing work, supported by CRL, of organizing and preparing the documents held in the IPEAFRO collection for microfilm and, in partnership with the National Library of Brazil, producing the microfilms. To date, IPEAFRO has delivered a total of 108 films (54 negative and 54 positive) to LAMP through the Library of Congress office at the U.S. Consulate in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil’s National Archive digitized part of the collection, and IPEAFRO has made digitized documents available to the public on its website.

The collection is divided into five sections: Black Experimental Theater Section, Black Arts Museum Section, Abdias Nascimento Political Activity Section, Abdias Nascimento Biography and Intellectual Work Section, and IPEAFRO Section. Two...
