Participating librarians and scholars provide information here about collections, archives and data sets of interest to area and international studies (AIS) research, propose preservation of those collections and the creation of new digital resources from data sets, and vote on the merits of those proposals. Community input provided here informs and guides the building of new AIS resources.
Digital Preservation of Nepalī Traimāsika and Pūrva Ṭāimsa: Two important sources for scholars of XX-century Nepal
The project aims to digitize the Nepali-language periodicals titled “Nepalī Traimāsika” (Trimonthly) and “Pūrva Ṭāimsa” (Weekly). A list of volumes and issues along with brief descriptions of the proposed titles are appended. The digital copy will be prepared from the original periodicals. Digital copies of each will be sent to SAMP and kept at Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya (MPP). (This is a continuation of a project to digitize Nepali newspapers and periodicals collected and filmed by the MPP under the supervision of LC consultants.)
Leftist Serials in Tamil: Markcist Mata Italkalai and Cemmalar
Building on increased interest in the “global left” and deepening the growing corpus of leftist material made available in digital format through SAMP & SAOA (for example, Nalupu, Amukh, Kranti, Viplav, Viplavi Tract, Bagi, the Sajjad Zaheer Archive), we propose to digitize and make openly available two communist journals in Tamil:

CLASCO (Latin American Council of Social Sciences) Open Access Book Project
LARRP endorsed the CLACSO (Latin American Council of Social Sciences) Open Access Book Project in 2015. The goal of the pilot project was to identify a quality-controlled collection of open access books in order to explore services for libraries in the areas of hosting, deposit, quality assurance, dissemination and digital preservation.
In year one a collaborative investment made by seven research libraries made it possible to process the 2018 and 2019 CLACSO OA Books for full discovery via Books@JSTOR. In year two a collaborative investment by 10 research libraries made it possible to process the 2020 and selected 2021 CLACSO OA Books. JSTOR provides metadata and full text for these titles to ProQuest Summon; Ex Libris Primo and Alma; EBSCO Discovery Service; and OCLC...
State of Baja California Human Rights Commission Archives Case Digitization Project Phase 1B
After a successful pilot during the summer of 2017, the University of San Diego (USD) - Copley Library will digitize the case backlog on the Fall 2020/Spring 2021 destruction schedule. Cases go as far back as the 1990s before there was a Comisión Estatal de los Derechos Humanos de Baja California (CEDH). These cases hold information on the types of abuses that were filed during that time along the Baja California/California border. The data in these cases, many of which were terminated, closed or dismissed before full investigations were completed, will provide a snapshot of the region for border scholars and historians alike. The Encounter: Official newspaper of the Christian League of Southern Africa and the Rhodesia Christian group
Countering the efforts of the antiapartheid community the CLSA and the RCG rallied in support of the governments apartheid policies. Both groups supported the government’s policies on religious grounds in the case of the CLSA and on anti Marxists grounds in terms of the RCG. The CLSA was criticized for brining both religious and political issues together in the same debate.

The PLO worked with its international offices to print serials abroad. This periodical is a monthly run printed in Athens, mainly in Greek, from 1984 to 1986.
New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung
This project would digitize the Center for Research Libraries’ holdings of a German language newspaper New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung, which was a series of related titles published in New York, NY from the 1830s until at least 1991.
The holdings to be included in this digitization project are from 1891-1921, with some gaps. This material would then be openly accessible through CRL’s online platform.
Abendpost
This project would digitize the Center for Research Libraries’ holdings of a German language newspaper Abendpost, which was published in Chicago, IL 1889-1950, and in 1950 merged with a Milwaukee paper to become Abendpost und Milwaukee Deutsche Zeitung until publication ceased in 1991.
The holdings to be included in this digitization project are from 1894-1925, with some gaps. This material would then be openly accessible through CRL’s online platform.
Neue Zürcher Zeitung
This project would digitize the Center for Research Libraries’ holdings of a German language newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung, which was published in Zurich, Switzerland.
The holdings to be included in this digitization project are from 1882-1925, with some gaps. This material would then be openly accessible through CRL’s online platform.

This project would digitize CRL’s holdings of Novyĭ mir ezhenedi︠e︡lʹnai︠a︡ rabochai︠a︡ gazeta for the years:

Ujedinjeno srpstvo = United Serbians
This project would digitize CRL’s holdings for Ujedinjeno srpstvo = United Serbians for the years 1917 – 1922 and make them openly accessible on CRL's platform. It was a Serbian language periodical that was published in Chicago, Illinois from 1906-1948, but only the holdings from 1917-1922 are available at this time for digitization.
Digital Collections for Latin American and U.S. Latino Spanish Language Research Phase 2
This 12 month project will complete the most significant remaining portion of a current LARRP-supported transcription project that was impeded significantly by the events of 2020 and additional challenges with visa and immigration-related issues for a key project team member.
Monographs of Cuban Heritage for Public Access
The George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida, in partnership with the Davis Library at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, request funding to digitize approximately 70,000 pages of Latin American and Caribbean content including approximately 307 titles, including 42 rare Cuban monograph titles held at the Universities of Florida and North Carolina.
